The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face is a 1957 folk song written by English singer-songwriter Ewan MacColl, for his would-be wife Peggy Seeger, to sing.

However in 1972, American singer Roberta Flack popularized the song with her jazz soul version produced by Joel Dorn that eventually became a breakout hit for her.

The song originally appeared on her 1969 debut studio album First Take.

Her version eventually reached Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and Number 14 on the UK Singles chart.

Tidbit: Clint Eastwood used Flack’s version in his 1971 directorial film debut, Play Misty for Me.
