Nigeria have qualified for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, following a 1-1 draw with South Africa on Saturday. The Super Eagles traveled for the game as group leaders with nine points, with the Bafana Bafana second with eight.
Gernot Rohr’s men went ahead through Samuel Kalu, in what appeared like an own goal before the hosts levelled. There were no goals in the second half.
Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr has explained why his side played a 1-1 draw with South Africa in Saturday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifying fixture at the BFN Stadium in Johannesburg.
An own goal from South Africa defender, Buhle Mkhwanazi, and a strike from striker, Lebo Mothiba ensured both sides got a point. Rohr said his side drew with South Africa because they did not want to take a risk against the hosts.
“We started the first half very well but the second half was not too good,” Rohr told Super Sports after the game.
“We tried to score more goals in the second half but we did not want to take any risk because we knew a draw will qualify to 2019 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon.”
In the other game, Libya mauled Seychelles 8-1.Nigeria host Seychelles in their last fixture of the qualifying series.
